How sourcing commission works
A buyer-side sourcing agent is normally paid a percentage of the factory invoice value. The structure matters as much as the number:
- Commission on the factory invoice — you see what the factory charges and what the agent charges. This is the transparent model.
- Undisclosed markup — the agent buys and resells, and you never see the factory price. Cheaper on paper, more expensive in practice.
- Supplier rebate — the agent is paid by the factory. Their advice is then worth nothing to you, because they are not working for you.
Ask any agent which of the three they operate. The answer tells you whose side they are on.
Rates usually slide with order value, and a minimum fee typically applies on small orders because the fixed work — supplier search, verification, inspection, documentation — does not shrink with the quantity.
